Ask an Expert
Energy-saving tips for dust control systems
Q: Our dust control system costs a lot of money to run. What can we do to minimize energy costs?
There are a number of things you can do to reduce the system’s operating costs without sacrificing dust control performance.
The dust control system’s operating costs typically are for the exhaust fan motor’s energy consumption and the filter-cleaning system’s compressed air usage. Much is written in our industry today about how to reduce the system’s static pressure by using new performance filter media that can provide a lower pressure drop across the filters. The fan energy needed to overcome pressure drop and move air and dust through the system can represent as much as 25 percent of your system’s total energy requirement, so reducing the pressure drop across your filters can save money year in and year out.

Feature
The importance of ingredient characteristics in master batching
Peter R. Holman, Holman Engineering Inc.
photoAchieving the right proportion of a minor or micro ingredient in a batch can make or break the final product. But mixing these ingredients uniformly throughout the batch is no simple matter. Using a master batch, also called a premix, can greatly improve your product by increasing production, reducing ingredient handling, reducing worker exposure to ingredients, and providing more uniform mixture quality from batch to batch.
When determining which ingredients to include in the master batch, you need to consider each ingredient’s characteristics in relation to the others. Some important characteristics are chemical compatibility and stability, solubility, particle size, and porosity.

Read It Here First:
Understanding equipment erosion
photoIt can be a shock when you look for the reason behind an equipment malfunction and discover that a vital component has completely eroded away. Equipment erosion is probably one of the biggest challenges in particle processing, especially in processes where the particles are hard, nonspherical, and moving. I’ve seen erosion damage in rotary valves, pumps, screw conveyers, pneumatic conveyors, cyclones, and fluidized beds. Sometimes the erosion results in a safety shutdown. At other times, it produces an unexpected maintenance shutdown, usually due to an environmental issue or the potential for a dust explosion.
No matter the type of shutdown, costs for equipment replacement, labor, and lost productivity are usually high. Yet, you don’t have to let equipment erosion control your process and your business. Understanding how particles cause erosion is often the first step in solving the problem and significantly extending your equipment’s life.
To learn how particles cause erosion, you can read “Understanding equipment erosion” by Ray Cocco, Particulate Solid Research Inc., in the October issue of Powder and Bulk Engineering.

Industry News
California metal companies to spend more than $196K for federal violations
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that as a result of investigations of three southern California metal finishing companies, the companies will collectively spend more than $196,650 for hazardous waste and Clean Water Act violations. All three facilities are located along the I-710 freeway corridor, a region of focus for the agency. For more details, read the full news release on the EPA website.
Protech acquires Innotek
The Protech/Oxyplast Group, Montreal — one of the world’s largest manufacturers and marketers of powder coatings — has reached an agreement to purchase the powder coating business and manufacturing assets of Innotek Powder Coatings, Big Spring, Tex. Protech will integrate the Innotek’s manufacturing operations into its own organization.
Algeria plans large-scale phosphate plant
The Algerian government is planning a new US$2 billion phosphate conversion plant through Sonatrach, its state-owned oil and petrochemicals firm. Construction is expected to start this year and finish in 2015, with the plant ultimately having an annual production capacity of 5 million tons.
NFPA adopts user-friendly rights management strategy
In an effort to make digital versions of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards easier to use across multiple platforms, the NFPA announced that it will no longer use digital rights management (DRM) that locks down PDFs to a specific device. The PDFs will instead incorporate a “social DRM” digital watermarking system, which ties a publication to a specific user rather than a specific device.
First Cromadex facility in Ireland opens
Cromadex Coatings, part of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings Ltd., Amsterdam, opened its first center in Ireland last month. The center, in Cork, is a joint initiative between Cromadex and Carbon Group and features facilities for salt spray and laboratory testing as well as surface treatment and application. It will supply a variety of surface treatment, paint technology, and plant equipment as well as a range of coatings brands. AkzoNobel plans to open additional facilities in Dublin and Belfast by the end of the year.
Packaging calculator app launches
Flexible packaging film converter Glenroy Inc., Menomonee Falls, Wis., has released a free flexible packaging application for Apple devices. The Glenroy Packaging Calculator allows users to calculate commonly used flexible packaging specifications, such as roll weight, roll footage, roll diameter, basis weight, and yield.
